REGION
For its natural beauty, history and art, its mild climate and excellent cuisine, the Bay of Naples is a unique place, known all over the world. This makes tourism one of the main economic activities of the entire coastline.
The Bay of Naples is a large inlet of the coastline, extending for an impressive 195 km and including the Bay of Pozzuoli, the Neapolitan Riviera and Vesuvius, the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, and the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri. The northern part of the bay, to the west of Naples, is occupied by the volcanic system of the Campi Flegrei.
In the bay there are many islands that make up the Campanian archipelago. The largest and most important are Ischia, Procida, Vivara and Capri.
The tourism offer ranges from the many archaeological sites scattered throughout the area to the thermal spas of Ischia, Castellammare di Stabia and the Phlegraean coastline, the natural parks of Mount Vesuvius and Astroni, the monuments of Naples, the glamour of Ischia and Capri, the marine parks of Baia and Gaiola, and the beauty of the Sorrento peninsula.
Seaside tourism also plays a significant role, with countless bays and beaches, not to mention sailing and boating along the coasts.
During the summer, the Bay of Naples is one of the most appreciated seaways and cruise destinations in the Mediterranean. This is also due to a system of ports that has grown over the years.
Thanks to its regular winds, the Bay of Naples is considered one of the best race courses in the world. The sailing regattas of the 1960 Olympic Games took place here; in addition, the bay was chosen for some preliminary races of the America’s Cup World Series in 2012 and 2013.
